Dr Ashish Jain, Professor, DrHarvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental
Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered the 'Colgate Oration' at the 72nd
National Indian Dental Conference at Indore from 18-20 January, 2019, hosted by
India Dental Association(IDA). Dr Jain spoke on
the topic 'Whole Mouth Health' wherein he emphasized on the role of the dentist
in educating the general public on the prevention strategies of oral diseases.
He informed the startling fact to the gathering that for the last 25 years, the
burden of oral diseases have not shown any improvement and that the oral
diseases still effect 50 percent of the population globally whereas this number
is more than 70% in India. Further he said that with increasing evidence of the
role of oral diseases in systemic diseases like diabetes, heart attacks, it is
about time that the policy makers of the country take stock of the situation
and review its policies so that conscious efforts can be made to improve the
oral health and subsequently general health of India population before it takes
epidemic proportions. He appealed to IDA to include its strong membership base
to launch a national movement of improving oral health of Indian population. IDA
is a strong 50,000 member organization and its National conferences are the
largest dental conference of the country. The conference was being attended by
over 4500 dentists from India and abroad. The Congress had two oration lectures
in the name of Colgate and Dr R Ahmed who is considered to be the father of
Indian Dentistry. Plethora of speakers from countries like US,Sweden,Germany
etc. participated in the Conference.
