NSS LAUNCHES HANDMADE BAGS
SAVE ENVIRONMENT, NEGLECT POLYTHENE: MAYOR

“Gone
are the days when our grandparents used to carry Jholas (Cloth Handmade/ Carry
Bags) to the markets, now we feel down market to even carry a cloth bag. Hence our
environment is suffering as plastic takes millions of years to degrade in
environment”, said Sh.Davesh Moudgil, Mayor, Chandigarh while launching the
Campaign Bring Back Jholachaap at Panjab University,
Chandigarh here today in the presence Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of University
Instruction (DUI) PU, and Prof A. S. Ahluwalia, Secretary to Vice Chancellor.
In this unique initiative by SARTHI for Climate Vandevi (A Trust) in
collaboration with Department of Environment,
Chandigarh
and NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Yuva Sankalpa Foundation (NGO)and Ojas
hospital at Panchkula have collected Clean old clothes (Bed Sheets,
Curtains, T-shirts, Shirts and trousers) from Chandigarh people and
get it stitched-up from a self-help group of Rampur village in Mohali trained
in association of Punjab Heritage and Tourism Board, Chandigarh. These are made
by the under-privileged ladies who have stitched carry bags at nominal cost.The
Cloth bags are further being sold in the market at a minimum cost of Rs 10 to
Rs 25.
This project aims to clean-up our mess from
our homes which will be converted into handbags, it will save
environment and decrease the usage of polythene and plastic bags. Besides this,
it will help the ladies of the self-help group to earn a better
livelihood for themselves and for their family. This project was
undertaken under the continuous guidance of Mrs. Navdeep Sharma, Programme
Coordinator, NSS, PU, Chandigarh and tireless efforts of Dr Gaurav Gaur, Centre
for Social Work who made this project possible. This could not have been possible
without the financial sponsor’s i.e Ojas Hospital. Ms. Taruni
Gandhi, Chairperson of Trust. Media4pillar.com is the media partner for this
project and she informed that maximum clean old cloth donation have been received
from Panjab University.
