THE STORY OF MUKISA - CHILD PATIENT FROM UGANDA

The
story starts with a four year old child –A badly burnt case was brought to the
Medical Camp of The Medical Mission of The Rotary Club Chandigarh under the
Stewardship of PRIP R K Saboo at Musaka, Uganda in August 2018. A child with
practically no eyelids, no eyebrows, burnt lips and badly burnt forehead and
part of the head and all the ten fingers of both hands burnt totally. The 6
month old child had fallen into an open ‘Chullah” face downwards.This resulted
in the complete loss of vision in his
one eye and partial vision in the left eye. Dr. V D Singh, a Rotarian, from VD
Plastic Surgery Centre, Landmark Hospital,Sector 33,Chandigarh examined Mukisa
s/o Lonard , a Gardner in Masaka .Dr.Singh performed three surgeries, namely he
reconstructed the right thumb, his lips, eyelids and implanted eyebrows. Simultaneously
Dr. SPS Grewal, an eminent Ophthalmologist and a Rotarian from Chandigarh examined
his eyes. He found that the right eye was completely damaged.

He
operated upon the left eye successfully. After a fortnight, the medical mission
returned to India. But both doctors left behind detailed post-care instructions
and the progress of Mukisa was monitored regularly. In the meantime, Rotarians
in Masaka, especially Emanuel Kalongote, collected funds and requisitioned the
services of a noble hearted rotaractor Musa and sent him as Mukisa’s companion
to India, Mukisa’s parents being illiterate. Rotary club Chandigarh offered to
take care of Mukisa’s further surgeries and also boarding and lodging expenses.
During the Chanidgarh stay of one month, Mukisa’s left thumb has been
reconstructed from his right thigh. Mukisa can now hold a pen and spoon between
the hollow side of the palm and thumb. The bandages will finally be taken off
in the third week of September. The second surgery has been the skin grafting
of the forehead and the affected part of the head. The bandages will be removed
in Masaka on 6th September. Mukisa will now be able to lead a much
more comfortable life ahead. After four intensive investigations of both the
eyes, Dr. S.P.S Grewal has reached the conclusion that the left eye has
regained 85% of it’s vision. This vision will definitely help Mukisa lead a
normal life. The handicap of being deprived of the right eye completely may not
be as disabling. The cornea implant in the right eye at this stage has not been
considered feasible because the squint that has developed cannot be corrected
until he is eight years old. Due to expertise in post cornea implant care
unavailable in Masaka, only the electrolysis in the left eyelid has been done
to improve further vision. THIS
IS A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF A SERVICE ABOVE SELF BY THE JOINT EFFORTS AND FUNDING
BY THE GRACIOUS ROTARIANS. THE DOCTORS WHO HAVE OPERATED ON MUKISA HAVE
RENDERED EXEMPLARY SERVICE ON BEHALF OF THE ROTARY CLUB. NOT THE LEAST THIS
WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE COLLECTIVE EFFORTS OF THE ROTARIANS,
THE DOCTORS AND THE ROTRACTORS.THE MOST SIGNIFICANT HERE IS THE MENTION OF THE
CONNECT BETWEEN PDG EMANUEL FROM ROTARY CLUB MASAKA AND OUR PRIP R K SABOO. TRUE
THAT THE ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD.
