Prof. Rajat Sandhir, Department of Biochemistry, Panjab
University, Chandigarh delivered
a talk on relationship of Blood Sugar and Brain Health related to his work in connection
between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease in a plenary session on “Recent Trends
of Research in Neurodegenerative diseases” during the Indian Science Congress concluded
recently at Jalandhar. He stressed that the root of
"Alzheimer’s disease" is the phenomenon in which brain cells are unable to respond to insulin, which is
essential for basic tasks, including memory and learning. In the
last 20 years, there has been a parallel rise in the number of
people with diabetes the rate of Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer’s disease has
now been classified as a new type of diabetes (type 3 diabetes). He also showed from
his pre-clinical work that correcting insulin dysfunctions in the brain cells
is beneficial in reversing memory functions.Prof. Sandhir
also chaired a “Science Communicators’ Meet” which was meant to bring
together different interest groups in the field of science promotion and communication
on a single platform.
