Humanism above should be the spirit, for greater goodwill and brotherhood among people, so as a socially responsible company they at HPCL joined hands with Gandhian NGO like Yuvsatta (youth for peace), to promote the ‘Wall of Kindness’ concept which Yuvsatta is already  successfully doing at many places in the tricity’, shared Gagandeep Singh Sodhi, DGM (Retail) of  Hindustan Petroleum Company Limited, who inaugurated the ‘Wall of Kindness’, created by HPCL today first at CL DAV Agarwal DAV School, Sector 7B and later at HPCL Petrol Pump at Sector 15B, Chandigarh. Thanking HPCL for their support Mrs. Sunita Ranyal, Principal of CL Agarwal DAV School, Sector 7B, said that Peace Club of their School divided the task of bringing donations of cloths, utensils, shoes, bags etc. section wise in Schools. And they have over 40 different class sections, so supplies of extra cloths and utensils for ‘School Wall of Kindness’ will be there throughout the year. Pramod Sharma, coordinator of Yuvsatta added that promoting the spirit of giving, boosting youth volunteerism and strengthening social harmony are the keys to any notion of living in peaceful & caring world. And such initiatives like ‘Wall of Kindness’, are an effective medium to do it. An official of HPCL added that from today onwards they have placed drop boxes to leave extra cloths, woolens and utensils for the needy people at all of their HPCL Petrol Pumps in the tricity of Chandigarh, Panchkula and SAS Nagar. And all donations collected there will be distributed through Yuvsatta among the less privileged in slum areas of the city.

Ministry of Human Resource and Development organized the first live session under India First: Leadership Talk Series with Shri Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group. Supported by M.I.C. and A.I.C.T.E., the event aimed at promoting Smart India Hackathon and scope it opens for the young Indians. A live session of the same was organized in University Institute of Engineering and Technology(UIET), Panjab University, Chandigarh under Institute Innovation Centre (I.I.C.) wherein students from all branches and courses of B.E., M.E.and PhD attended the session. Anand Mahindra ji shared his experiences from college and school life and asked students to learn to accept failure and improve rather than grieve. He also explained that how his experiences in various fields helped him mould into a better leader and qualities of leadership he seeks in a person. He also talked about how Mahindra group promotes innovative thinking by organising events as Mahindra Rise and Innovation mela to bring out the best of their employees. He emphasized on moving our attitude from Jugaad to Jhakaas in a comic tone. Event ended with him encouraging kids to take part in Smart India Hackathon and develop an innovative bent of mind. Professors also encouraged students to attend the session and take part in the Smart India Hackathon. Rules were explained to students by IIC member professors.

Dr. Cecelia Williams and Dr. Linda Winona, scientists from Sandia National Lab(SNL)., USA , along with Prof. Neena Capalash from Department of Biotechnology and Prof. Prince Sharma from Department of Microbiology, met the Panjab University Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar today to discuss with him the roadmap and business plan to establish BIORISK Management Center in PU which will be the first of its kind Center in India with the mandate to train researchers from various parts of the country on the Biosafety and Biosecurity aspects of research being carried out in various Disciplines of Biology e.g. Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Zoology, Botany etc. The detailed discussion involved the building plan, resources to construct and generate funds for its self-sustainability through the development of syllabi for certificate courses. SNL will also train scientists from PU for equipment certification and these scientists then can generate money through Consultancy and as certifiers. The USA Department of State Biosecurity Engagement Program will help in setting up the Center. PU had signed MoU with SNL last year in 2018 under which the Department of Biotechnology, PU, in collaboration with SNL, will organize 2-3 workshops per year to train research fellows and faculty.

भारतीय जनता पार्टी चण्डीगढ़ के प्रदेशाध्यक्ष संजय टंडन की अध्यक्षता में साथ में चण्डीगढ़ की सांसद किरण खेर, संगठन महामंत्री दिनेश कुमार और यूटी गवर्मेंट इम्पालइज सी.एच.बी. हाउसिंग वेलफेयर सोसाइटी चण्डीगढ़ के 100 से भी अधिक सरकारी कर्मचारी भारत के गृहमंत्री राजनाथ सिंह से मिले और उनका धन्यवाद व्यक्त किया । केन्द्र सरकार ने यूटी कर्मचारियों के अवास की योजना पर मोहर लगाकर चण्डीगढ़ में उनके अपने मकान का सपना पूरा होने के लिए सार्थक कदम उठाया । उन्होंने गृहमंत्री राजनाथ सिंह से आग्रह किया कि इस योजना का शिलान्यास इसी माह में उनके कर कमलों द्वारा हो । आये हुए सभी यूटी कर्मचारियों को इस योजना के लिए गृहमंत्री राजनाथ सिंह ने बधाई दी और साथ ही उनके दिल्ली स्थित उनके निवास पर मिलने के लिए आने पर धन्यवाद भी किया । इतना ही नहीं गृहमंत्री ने आये हुए सभी कर्मियों से ने केवल उनके हाथों से फूल लिये बल्कि उन सभी लोगों को अपने घर में चाय-नाश्ता भी करवाया । इसके उपरांत प्रदेशाध्यक्ष संजय टंडन के साथ यूटी कर्मचारियों के पाँच सदस्यों ने संसद भवन में वित्तमंत्री अरूण जेटली से भेंटवार्ता की और उनका भी धन्यवाद व्यक्त किया । इस भेंटवार्ता में चण्डीगढ़ की सांसद किरण खेर नहीं आ पाई क्योंकि संसद में उनका प्रश्न लगा हुआ था । इसके बाद सभी लोगों ने भारतीय जनता पार्टी के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष अमित शाह और कानून एवं विधि मंत्री रवि शंकर प्रसाद और गृह राज्यमंत्री हंसराज अहीर से भी भेंट की और उनका भी विशेष आभार व्यक्त किया ।

इस बार लोहड़ी का पर्व गुरु गोविंद सिंह जी के प्रकाशोत्सव तथा रविवार के कारण और भी विशेष है । लोहड़ी  परंपरागत रूप से रबी फसलों की फसल से जुड़ा हुआ है और यह किसान परिवारों में सबसे बड़ा उत्सव भी है । पंजाबी किसान लोहड़ी के बाद भी वित्तीय नए साल के रूप में देखते हैं । कुछ का मानना है कि लोहड़ी ने अपना नाम लिया है .कबीर की पत्नी लोई ग्रामीण पंजाब में लोहड़ी लोही है । मुख्यतः  पंजाब का पर्व होने से इसके नाम के पीछे कई तर्क दिए जाते हैं। ल का अर्थ लकड़ी है, ओह का अर्थ गोहा यानी उपले, और ड़ी का मतलब रेवड़ी । तीनों अर्थों को मिला कर लोहड़ी बना है । 

अग्नि प्रज्जवलन का  मुहूर्त : रविवार  की सायंकाल 6 बजे  लकड़ियां, समिधा, रेवड़ियां, तिल आदि सहित अग्नि प्रदीप्त करके अग्नि पूजन के रुप में लोहड़ी का पर्व मनाएं  रात्रि 11 बजकर 42 मिनट तक । 

संपूर्ण भारत में लोहड़ी का पर्व धार्मिक आस्था, ऋतु परिवर्तन, कृशि उत्पादन, सामाजिक औचित्य से  जुड़ा है। पंजाब में यह कृशि में रबी फसल से संबंधित है, मौसम परिवर्तन का सूचक तथा आपसी सौहार्द्र का परिचायक है । सायंकाल लोहड़ी जलाने का अर्थ है कि अगले दिन सूर्य का मकर राषि में प्रवेष पर उसका स्वागत करना। सामूहिक रुप से आग जलाकर सर्दी भगाना और मूंगफली , तिल, गज्जक , रेवड़ी खाकर षरीर को सर्दी के मौसम में अधिक समर्थ बनाना ही लोहड़ी मनाने का उद्देश्य है। आधुनिक समाज में लोहड़ी उन परिवारों को सड़क पर आने को मजबूर करती है जिनके दर्षन पूरे वर्श नहीं होते । रेवड़ी मूंगफली का आदान प्रदान किया जाता है। इस तरह सामाजिक मेल जोल में इस त्योहार का महत्वपूर्ण योगदान है । इसके अलावा कृशक समाज में  नव वर्श भी आरंभ हो रहा है । परिवार में गत वर्श नए षिषु के आगमन या विवाह के बाद पहली लोहड़ी पर जष्न मनाने का भी यह अवसर है। दुल्ला भटटी की सांस्कृतिक धरोहर को संजो रखने का मौका है।  बढ़ते हुए अष्लील गीतों  के युग में ‘सुन्दरिए मुंदरिए हो  ’ जैसा लोक गीत सुनना बचपन की यादें ताजा करने का समय है । आयुर्वेद के दृश्टिकोण से  जब तिल युक्त आग जलती है, वातावरण में बहुत सा संक्रमण समाप्त हो जाता है और परिक्रमा करने से षरीर में गति आती है । गावों मे आज भी लोहड़ी के समय सरसों का साग, मक्की की रोटी अतिथियों को परोस कर उनका स्वागत किया जाता है ।

कांग्रेस महासचिव शशिशंकर तिवारी ने चण्डीगढ़ शिक्षा विभाग की आलोचना करते हुए कहा कि शहर में 115 सरकारी स्कूल हैं जिसमें तकरीबन 1,20,000 बच्चे पढ़ते हैं । इनमें से आठवीं कक्षा से नीचे की कक्षाओं में पढ़ने वाले 90,000 बच्चों को गर्म वर्दी लेने के लिए सर्दी शुरू होने से पहले ही उन बच्चों के अकाउंट में से चले जाने चाहिए थे लेकिन आधी सर्दी बीत जाने के बावजूद भी चंडीगढ़ शिक्षा विभाग के अधिकारी इतने लापरवाह है कि अभी तक जो गरीब बच्चे हैं उनको पैसे नहीं भेजे गए । भाजपा शासित चंडीगढ़ प्रशासन बाकी मामले में तो फेल है ही लेकिन इस कडकती हुई ठण्ड में बच्चों की भी चिंता नही है । तिवारी ने चंडीगढ़ के प्रशासक बीपी सिंह बदनोर से मांग की है कि अविलम्ब तौर पर बच्चों को गर्म वर्दी  के पैसे उनके अकाउंट में डलवा जाए ताकि भीषण ठण्ड से उनका बचाव हो सके। उन्होंने ये भी मांग की कि इस मामले में लापरवाही बरतने वाले संबंधित अधिकारियों के खिलाफ कठोर कार्रवाई की जाये ।

A Session on Fire Safety and how the fire extinguisher works was orchestrated at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Hall, Boy’s Hostel No. 4, Panjab University, here today to make residents, staff, mess and canteen workers aware about the emergency course of  action to be implemented in case of fire. Prof (Dr.) Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare inaugurated the session and in his address he said that there are four elements that must be present for a fire to exist. There must be oxygen to sustain combustion, heat to raise the material to its ignition temperature, fuel to support the combustion and a chemical reaction between the other three elements. Remove any one of the four elements to extinguish the fire as the concept of fire protection is based upon keeping these four elements separate. Prof. Nahar further stated that the fire extinguishers are a great safety tool and getting training on the proper use and maintenance of this life saving tool is key. The Fire Safety session was conducted by Mr. Amit. The meticulous interactive session included a demonstration about operating fire extinguisher in case of fire emergency. The live demonstration session was created in a situation which replicates what would happen if a real fire were to occur by having a mock fire outside the hostel compound and the technique to use the fire extinguishers was practically done by the residents and staff of the Boy’s Hostel No. 4 in the presence of the hostel warden. While addressing the gathering of residents and staff, Mr. Amit said that when it is time to use the extinguisher on a fire, just remember the catch word ‘PASS’. He elaborated the acronym ‘PASS’ as:1) Pull the pin. 2) Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire from the recommended safe distance.3) Squeeze the operating lever to discharge the fire extinguishing agent.4) Starting at the recommended distance, Sweep the nozzle or hose from side to side until the fire is out. Move forward or around the fire area as the fire diminishes. Watch the area in case of re-ignition. Security staff of the hostel Sardar Pragat Singh stated that it’s a good idea to practice picking up, holding and using a fire extinguisher as one gets a practical experience of handling any untoward break-out of fire.  The demonstration was very much useful for the students to understand the working pattern of fire extinguishers. Residents, office staff, gardeners, security personnel and Mess & Canteen workers took active part and witnessed the safety measure wholeheartedly.

Department of Biotechnology, Panjab University, Chandigarh is organizing a week long workshop to create and spread awareness among researchers about how and why to follow bio safety and bio security measures in research work which started today with a workshop on BIORISK MANAGEMENT. Dr Cecelia Williams and Dr Linda Winona are here as Resource Persons from Sandia National Laboratories (SNLs) to conduct the workshop. Since 2014 PU has organised 11 such workshops on Biorisk Management. Sandia has trained select PU faculty to organize these workshops along with resource persons from SNLs. As of date more than 100 researchers from all over India have been trained, informed Prof. Neena Capalash, Department of Biotechnology.These training Workshops are very important as large number of students work on biological materials during their research work and through these workshops we raise awareness among students and faculty to handle infectious material in a safe way. Panjab University, Chandigarh signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, USA under which a series of workshops on BIORISK MANAGEMENT are organized every year. The MoU envisions the establishment of a Centre at Panjab University facilitated by SNL, USA. This centre will be first of its kind in India to disseminate the know-how on safe and secure bio-research.
