Today, to mark the ongoing Water
Conservation Fortnight, Eco Club of Govt. Girls Model Sr. Sec. School alongwith
Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration and Yuvsatta- an NGO,
observed a Water Conservation Day with colourful events of poster making
contest, rangoli’s, declamation, green-quiz and pledge as ‘every single drop of
water counts’. Mr. TC Nautiyal, IFS, Conservator of Forests, Chandigarh
Administration was the Chief Guest on the occasion. And prominent amongst those
who participated includes Mr. Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta
and Mr. Kulbhushan Kanwar, environmentalist. In her welcome address the School
Principal Mrs. Raj Bala said that world water demand doubles
every 21 years, but the volume available is the same as it was in Roman times.
And according to United Nations and Stockholm Environment Institute, by
the year 2025, two-third of the world population will be affected by water
scarcity. She also added that water is precious and beyond
purchase and a casual approach will certainly bring the dooms day much
closer. In his address Mr. TC Nautiyal said that symptoms of water crisis are
everywhere. Around the globe, water tables are falling, underground aquifers
are being depleted, lakes are shrinking and wetlands crucial to the survival of
plants and wildlife are drying up. And we all must watch our habit to save
every single drop, especially while bathing using minimum required, not using
running water for while brushing, shaving, washing clothes or utensils and
especially flushing when only there is a need. Otherwise in normal course with
flushing we waste 10-20 litres of fresh water, where for small jobs, one mug
can also suffice. The programme ended with prizes for the winning
students of ‘Green-Quiz’.
