500 School students enjoyed migratory birds watching tours

As part of the migratory birds watching visits and cleanliness drives started by Yuvsatta-an NGO and Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration, this week over 500 School students from seven different Schools of the city visited Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary and enjoyed the sights of hundreds of migratory birds who had come to Chandigarh from far off places. As Chandigarh is on the flight path of many migratory birds, which fly from Himalayas and even far-off places such as Central Asia, Siberia & China. Today it was turn of 100 students from Eco Club of Government Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 46D and St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, to enjoy the pristine beauty of lake and nature at Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. The participating students first picked today trash around the place and watched the migratory birds under the able guidance of environmentalist Kulbhushan Kanwar and staff of Department of Forests & Wildlife of Chandigarh Administration. Sharing about the initiative Pramod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta said that in the last one week they had organized such visits for seven different Government & Private Schools of the city and around 500 young children were sensitized through this programme about the important role Birds play, as birds provide critical links within the vast food chains and webs that exist in our ecosystem. He further said that the annual migration of hundreds of migratory birds to Sukhna Lake is one of the nature’s most energetic and awe-inspiring phenomenon. Kulbhushan Kanwar an avid bird watcher resource person for the programme from Yuvsatta said that students today saw many beautiful birds like Common Pochard, Ruddy Shelduck, Common Coot, Greater Cormorant, Purple Heron and Oriental Pied Hornbill etc. Next week, Yuvsatta-volunteers intend to take another set of 500 students from various Schools of the city for the Endeavour.
