On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2022, the Department of Social Welfare, Women & Child Development, Chandigarh Administration has organized a mega event in collaboration with the line Departments of Chandigarh Administration in order to celebrate the diverse roles women play. The mega event was carried out at plaza, Sector 17 Chandigarh to salute the spirit of all women who are constantly making this world a better place. The event was organised in accordance to the SOP/guidelines issued by the Government of India amid COVID-19. The celebration witnessed record footfall and immense enthusiasm was exhibited by the public. The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, recognizing the contribution of women and girls around the world. Smt. Nitika Pawar, IAS, Secretary Women and Child Development, U.T. Chandigarh graced the occasion as Chief Guest along with dignitaries from other departments. The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest by releasing balloons and launching the signature campaign for supporting gender equality. The Secretary shared the message of Gender Equality and appealed the public to come forward to spread the message of equality. She emphasized that women are socially as well as economically an important part of the society and they must be given importance to realize their real potential. She shared that a sustainable world can only be realized when all people i.e. men and women are given equal opportunity along with equal support system and a positive mindset. During the event, officials/representatives of different departments/units i.e. Social Welfare and its corporations, Women & Child Helpline-181, Sakhi-One Stop Centre, UTCPS, Mahila Shakti Kendra, ICDS & Poshan Abhiyaan, Posts, Health Service & AYUSH promoted their welfare schemes. An exhibit on Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign was also displayed to promote a ‘Drug-free India’. A desk to promote "Sukanya Samridhi Yojana" along with other financial literacy schemes and their benefits was also set up by Department of Posts, Chandigarh Region. Public was sensitized on the benefits of Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts and was encouraged to open accounts of girl children to avail benefits under the scheme. A “Health Desk for Women” was organized in convergence with the Department of Health Service. During the event, 200 beneficiaries were screened for diabetes, anaemia screening and general Medicine. A desk on usage of Herbal plants was set up by Department of AYUSH. A separate Punjabi folk corner was also set up showcasing the cultural heritage. An FSSAI corner demonstrated the process to check the food quality. SWAYAM team from Department of Police demonstrated Self Defence Techniques for women/girls if ever caught in troublesome and difficult situation in public or private spaces. A Nukkar Natak with catchy dialogues, attractive slogans was also played taking the social message of gender equality & freedom to exercise economic empowerment among women to a large group of public present in the Plaza, Sector 17, Chandigarh. The Plaza was decorated with a Mega Rangoli on the theme of International Women's Day and the event concluded by an awareness drive by Anganwadi functionaries in the Plaza, Sector 17 voicing the slogans of Women Empowerment for a sustainable world and appealing everyone to be the protagonist of Gender Equality.
