WORKSHOP ON CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AT PANJAB

The
Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, held a
workshop on the recent revision in the post graduate curriculum, here
today. The chairperson of the department, Prof. Deepti Gupta, in her
inaugural address emphasized the need to engage with a competing global
environment as the basis for these revisions. One of the major issues
discussed today was how well the new curriculum could be implemented by
the affiliated institutions. The syllabus which is supposed to be
implemented from July 2019 has undergone significant revision. Notably,
modules on writing a dissertation and various outreach activities were
introduced and more stress has been laid uponCultural Studies in the
revised syllabus. Prof. Akshaya Kumar informed the audience about the
UGC’s Open Basket system enabling students to have multiple options to
choose from. He also mentioned that the new syllabus once implemented,
will be helpful to students attempting the NET exam. The new
syllabus will comprise segments on radio, television and social media as
discussed by Dr Surbhi Goel. Prof. Pushpinder Syal spoke about the
Linguistics and Language papers and suggested the methodology for them.
Dr Sudhir Mehra contrasted the earlier syllabus with the new one from the
point of view of the student body. Dr Meenu Gupta discussed the changes
in the British Literature courses. Moreover, Prof. Aneel Raina
stressed upon the various repercussions of the earlier syllabus and
suggested multiple innovative teaching methodologies for the current
curriculum. Towards the end of the workshop, there was a question-answer
session where various teachers from the affiliated institutions posed
their queries regarding the implementation of these changes. Prof.
Gupta concluded the workshop on a positive note saying that such changes
are influential in changing the mindset of individuals involved in the
domain of higher education in India.
