women, Sec-45B, Chandigarh organized guest lectures on “Applications of
Basic Sciences” by eminent Professors Prof. I. B. S. Passi (IISER Mohali),
Prof. S. K Tomar(Department of Mathematics), Prof. K. K.Bhasin(Department of
Chemistry), Prof. Keya Dharamvir (Department of Physics)), Panjab University
Chandigarh under the aegis of Chandigarh chapter of NASI (National academy of science,
India). Pricipal, Dr. Jaspal Kaur welcomed the esteemed guests and
congratulated the department for organizing this event. Professor S.
K. Tomar from center of advanced studies in mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh
delivered a lecture on “Mathematics: its applications in science&
Engineering. He started his talk with the definition of mathematics and
discussed the applications of mathematical equations in applied sciences
like steam engine, earth quake prediction, agriculture and many more. He
discussed complicated theorems and equations of mathematics in very easy manner which
can be used to solve our daily routine science problems. Professor Keya
Dharamvir from Department of Physics, Panjab University Chandigarh threw light
on Sir C. V. Raman’s life and achievements through her lecture entitled “When
radiation met vibrations: Life-lines of C. V. Raman”. Her lecture was
focused on Sir C. V. Raman’s journey of life which started from
understanding the vibrations of different musical instruments and reached
at winning Nobel Prize for Raman Effect. She made students understand in an interesting
way about the facts of vibrations, light and other eminent scientists of India
at that time. Professor K. K. Bhasin, CSIR Emeritus Scientist, Department
of chemistry, Panjab University, addressed students on the topic
“Fascinating Aspects of Chemistry”. As the title says he explained to the
students some interesting facts of molecules, bonding and structure. He also demonstrated
the concepts with live experiments to make students understand the concepts of chemistry
in a better way. All the speakers guided the B.Sc. students of the college
to understand the scientific concepts and recognize them in daily life as
it is the only way to learn and understand science.
