12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition kick starts at Punjab University

The 12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition organized by
Horticulture Division of Panjab University in Prof. R.C. Paul Rose Garden,
Panjab University, Chandigarh from 10-15 December, 2019 was inaugurated today
by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor Panjab University. Prof. Shankarji Jha,
Dean of University Instruction presided over the function. Prof. Karamjeet
Singh, Registrar was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor
appreciated the efforts of the Horticulture Division, Panjab University and
congratulated the staff of the Division by saying that Panjab University has
not only set high standards in Academics and Sports but also in Environment
Conservation. He emphasized that the exhibition is a mega event of not only the
University but also of the Tricity. As a token of appreciation, he awarded Sh.
Alok Singh, Sh. Vijay Bahadur and Sh. Daya Ram, malies of the Horticulture
Division for their contribution in nurturing the Chrysanthemum plants. Er. Anil
Thakur, Divisional Engineer (Hort.) apprised those present that like previous
years, this 12th edition of Chrysanthemum Exhibition has been organised by the Horticulture
Division to mark the advent of spring season. Simultaneously, it gives a message of environment protection to the masses and an opportunity to display
the best Chrysanthemum collection of Horticulture Division which have been
nurtured with hard work all through the year. There were about 40 arrangements
at the exhibition. The exhibition had about 150 varieties of Chrysanthemum and
about 4200 potted plants. Seven new varieties namely Sonali, Sapna, Mushtak,
Parveen, Mahatma, Dorris, Freshman, Alfred were displayed this year which have
been procured from places like Calcutta and Solan. This year the employees of
the University namely Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Chairperson, Department of Hindi,
Prof. Tirthankar Bhattacharya, Chairperson, Department of Art History &
Visual Arts, Prof. Ravneet Kaur, Warden, Girls Hostel No.3, Ms. Renuka B.
Salwan, Director, Public Relations and Sh. Honey Thakur, Sr. Assistantalso
displayed their Chrysanthemum plants at the exhibition. The visitors
appreciated these arrangements and were seen getting their photographs clicked
with these arrangements and fountains. Those who attended included Prof. R.C.
Sobti, former Vice Chancellor, during whose tenure the Prof. R.C. Paul Rose
Garden was created; Prof. Navdeep Goyal, Prof. Harsh Nayyar, PU Fellow; Prof.
R.K. Singla, Dean Research, Prof. Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examinations,
C.A. Vikram Nayyar, Finance & Development Officer, Mrs. Renuka B
Salwan, Director, Public Relations, Ar. Harpreet Singh, Architect, Er. R.K. Rai,
Executive Engineer-I, Prof. Ashwani Koul, Chief of University Security, Fellowsand
Syndics of University, Wardens of University Hostels, Eminent Academicians of
the University, Prof. Keshav Malhotra, PU Fellow, Dr. M.C. Sidhu, Prof. A.S.
Ahluwalia. The event was well attended and appreciated by faculty members,
non-teaching employees, students and general public. They were deeply impressed
with the exhibits displayed at the venue. Prof. R.C. Sobti got nostalgic at the
occasion and narrated the story behindthe creation of Prof. R.C. Paul Rose
Garden.
