Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), Chandigarh organized a Science Academies' Lecture Workshop on "Materials Engineering for Sustainable Environment and Energy (MESEE)" today. The objective of the lecture workshop is to update and enlighten the concepts in material physics, chemistry and engineering for graduate, under-graduate, doctoral students and young faculty. The special focal theme of the workshop was on application of materials for sustainable solutions for environment (monitoring) and energy (renewable energy). This lecture workshop has been sponsored and supported by the three National Science Academies-IASc, INSA, and NASI. Prof. R. K. Sinha while inaugurating the workshop said that the protection of environment and need for new sources of clean and green energy are important areas in which CSIO is working on besides the research in tactical areas. He said that this workshop will help in sharing of ideas and will give a boost to research in materials for Sustainable Environment and Energy.Among the eminent speakers who took lectures in this workshop were Prof. Hirendra Nath Ghosh, Director, INST, Mohali, Prof. Anil Kumar, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, and Prof. K. K. Bhasin, Emeritus Scientist Department of Chemistry, Panjab University. Prof. Hirendra Nath Ghosh, Director, INST, Mohali, enlightened the audience about his research in the area of making the solar sells more efficient and also making the hydrogen cells more economical. Prof. R. K. Sinha, Director, CSIR-CSIO, Chandigarh in his lecture discussed a new approach to understanding refractive index of materials and introduced the concept of zero refractive index that can make it possible to provide stealth coatings to avoid detection in covert operations,Dr. Pooja, Senior Scientist, CSIR-CSIO organised this workshop and around 150 participants from different parts of the country attended this workshop.
