The two-day UGC-DRS II National seminar on
“Towards Indian Theory/Theories of Cultural Studies” will commence
on 14 March 2019 at the Department of English and Cultural Studies,
Panjab University (Mulk Raj Anand Auditorium). The prime aim of the seminar is
to explore possibilities of creating critical paradigm, theories and concepts
to map configurations of contemporary Indian culture. Prof. Akshaya
Kumar, coordinator of the seminar observed that deliberations over
two days would primarily be on the writings, speeches, and
newspaper editorials written by Indian thinkers: Gandhi, Ambedkar,
Bhagat Singh, Vivekananda, Aurobindo among others in light of their views on nationalism,
culture, language, caste and colonialism. The keynote address will be delivered
by Prof. Bijoy Boruah, visiting professor of Philosophy at IIT Ropar. Prof. Raj
Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab Univeristy, Chandigarh will chair the inaugural session.
The seminar shall have six plenary speakers invited from leading universities and
institutes of the country. Prof. M V Narayanan, Fellow IIAS and professor of English
at University of Calicut would speak on the public and private spaces of the nation,
Prof Simona Sawhney from IIT Delhi would spell out ideas espoused by Bhagat Singh
and mbedkar. Prof. Sudhir Kumar will make critical reflections on Gandhi’s approach
to literary and cultural studies. Dr. Mohibul Haque from Aligarh Muslim University
shall speak on Sir Syed’s ideas of modernity. Prof. Sumanyu Satpathy, formerly
at Dept. of English, University of Delhi, will present his thoughts on the uses
of controversy in the current Indian scenario. Kamlesh Mohan from the
Department of History, Panjab University will make a presentation
on Gandhi’s concept of power, sexuality, and nationalism. In a
total of seven sessions, spread over two days, the seminar will
host discussions on contesting models of development, linguistic federalism,
emerging Indian popular culture and enetertainment. Additionally, it will examine
translational practices and entertainment aesthetics drawn from a close textual
analysis of Indian thinkers, writers and activists’ post-1857. The seminar is slated
to have a large participation of research scholars of the region.

Sudhir Kumar, DES-Multidisciplinary Research Centre, Panjab University Chandigarh
has been nominated as the Convener of the forthcoming Study Week (5-11 April
2019) on Relevance of Indian Literary Theories” today with special reference to Rasa,
Dhvani, Auchitya, akyapadiya and Kashmir Shaivism, including Buddhist, Sufi, Sikh,
and Bhakti Traditions by Indian Institute of Advanced Study Rashtrapati Nivas Shimla,
a prestigious Govt. of India Institute in recognition of his significant contribution
to the recotextualisation and reconstruction of Indian Literary Theories.
During the Study Week, eminent scholars in the field of Indian Literary
Theories and Cultural Studies will deliver lectures. The young
researchers and teachers from different Universities and Colleges
of India will participate in the Study Week. Prof. Kumar will also
deliver lectures on the Relevance of Theories of Dhvani, Rasa and
Auchitya in the contemporary contexts in order to bring about a Swaraj in ideas.

A project
entitled " Structure-Activity relationship studies of a novel
Two-component lantibiotic Roseocin " has been approved for
funding by DST-SERB, New Delhi, Govt. of India to Dr. Dipti Sareen,
Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh wherein
the project carries the Equipment grant worth Rs.19,75,000/- and consumables worth
Rs.12,00,000/- alongwith the grant for Manpower (JRF), Travel, Contingency and Overhead,
as per norms, for a period of 3 years. Prof. Raj Kumar PU VC, assured of
all the support required to successfully carry out the approved
project. The project aims to address the global challenge of antimicrobial
resistance (AMR) by ribosomally synthesized and
post-translationally modified anti-microbial eptides, also known as
‘lantibiotics’. These are emerging as more promising drugs against
antibiotic resistant bacteria since a significant resistance development against
lantibiotics takes a long time as compared to antibiotics. Earlier
studies in this lab, have already established the biosynthesis of a novel lantibiotic,
Roseocin from an actinomycete, whereby a genetically engineered expression
system enabling the independent production of fully modified and matured components
of a lantibiotic in E. coli host strain was achieved. The expression system developed
in this study constitutes an important cornerstone for the proposed in vivo peptide
engineering studies and is of significance for potential applications aiming at
higher production titres of ribosomally synthesised, post translationally
modified peptides. In order to fully realize the potential
of newly discovered peptide lantibiotic, Roseocin, it is necessary
to understand the biology and, in particular, to elucidate their
structure -function relationships and mode of action.

Prof. Raj
Kumar Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh today held an interactive
meeting with Chief of University Security, Prof. Ashwani Koul along with security
officers and assistant security officers. Campus security was reviewed and appropriate
measures were discussed to further strengthen the campus security. Issues like
installation of good quality CCTV cameras at sensitive places including number plate
reader (NPR) facilities and procurement of wireless sets were discussed. The Vice
Chancellor assured of necessary help regarding issues related to welfare of
security personnel.

The research paper entitled “ Dynamic Strain Measurements on a Cantilevered Beam Using CNT Based Strain Sensor” presented by Gaurav Sapra, Assistant Professor in UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was accorded the Best Oral Presentation Award.at the International Conference on Advanced Materials (ICAM) – 2019. The Conference was held by Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Jamia Millia Islamia, a Central University, New Delhi on 6th - 7th March, 2019. A total of around 500 papers were on the panel. Prof Renu Vig, Prof Manu Sharma and Jaskaran Singh, B.E. student are the co-authors.

The Academic and Resource Training Centre which
was recently formulated at the Centre for Social Work, Panjab University
organised its first programme as Panel discussion on Gujjar Women
an initiative by Punita Behl a research scholar. The panel
discussion was chaired by Professor Ramanjit Johl, Chairperson Department of Public
Administration and Professor Vandana Kumar Department of Law. The
Chairperson Dr Monica Munjial Singh said that the research scholars enrolled at
the centre would be organising seminars, panel discussions, capacity building programmes
etc. every month. Dr Gaurav Gaur Faculty Social Work added that
programmes would also be organised in the rural areas and slums.
Gujjar women shared their experiences which were very motivating and inspiring.

यूनियन, सीटीयू डिपो नंबर एक के ऑफिस रूम में हुई जिसमें सीटीयू के वार्षिक चुनाव के
बारे में चर्चा हुई । बैठक में तय किया गया कि मतदान 26 मार्च दिन मंगलवार को प्रात:
पांच बजे से रात्रि साढ़े आठ बजे तक होगा । जगह रहेगी इंडस्ट्रियल एरिया, फेज-1 स्थित
डिपो नंबर एक की वर्कशॉप की कैंटीन । मतगणना 27 मार्च को प्रात: दस बजे शुरू होगी ।
चुनाव के लिए सीटीयू के लेखाधिकारी कृष्णलाल मलिक को निर्वाचन अधिकारी नियुक्त किया
गया है जबकि सीनियर असिस्टेंट हरनेक सिंह को उपनिर्वाचन अधिकारी चुना गया है । उल्लेखनीय
है कि सीटीयू के चार पदाधिकारियों के लिए चुनाव होते हैं जिनमें अध्यक्ष, उपाध्यक्ष,
महासचिव व वित्त सचिव शामिल हैं ।

संगीत किसी भी फिल्म की कहानी का बहुत मत्त्वपूर्ण
हिस्सा होता है । यह फिल्म की पटकथा को ज़रूरी गतिक्रम ही नहीं देता बल्कि उसके भावों
को व्यक्त करने में भी ज़रूरी होता है । इसीलिए संगीत निर्देशक फिल्मों के निर्माण में
महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका रखते हैं । पंजाबी सिनेमा के एक दिग्गज संगीत निर्देशक जतिंदर शाह
ने पिछले एक दशक में कई गानों और फिल्मों में बेहतरीन संगीत दिया है । और इस बार वो
संगीत के साथ-साथ आने वाली पंजाबी फिल्म "बैंड वाजे" का निर्माण भी कर रहे
हैं । इस फिल्म में बिन्नू ढिल्लों और मैंडी तक्खर मुख्य भूमिका में नज़र आएंगे । इसके
साथ ही फिल्म में गुरप्रीत घुग्गी, जसविंदर भल्ला, समीप कंग और निर्मल ऋषि भी नज़र आएंगे
। समीप कंग ने बैंड वाजे का निर्देशन किया है और इसके निर्माता हैं जतिंदर शाह, पूजा
गुजराल, अतुल भल्ला और अमित भल्ला । वैभव और श्रेया ने इसकी कहानी लिखी है । फिल्मकार
एक के बाद एक गाने रिलीज़ कर रहे हैं । पहला गीत "नींद न आवे मैनूं", जिसे
सुनिधि चौहान और गुरशब्द ने गाया है, उसे लोगों का भरपूर प्यार मिला है । और अब फिल्म
का दूसरा गाना रिलीज़ हुआ है जिसका शीर्षक है "पैसे सुटने ताहां नूं" . इसे
गाया है पंजाबी संगीत जगत के सुनहरे सितारे मलकीत सिंह ने । गाने के बोल लिखे हैं माखन बराड़ ने । इन दोनों गानों और फिल्म के अन्य गीतों का संगीत
दिए है जतिंदर शाह ने। बैंड वाजे के संगीत के बारे में बात करते हुए जतिंदर शाह ने
कहा, "संगीत मेरे दिल के हमेशा ही बहुत करीब रहा है । यह मेरा जूनून ही नहीं है
बल्कि एक ऐसा भाव है जिसे मैं शब्दों में बयान नहीं कर सकता । जब बात संगीत की है तो
मैं बाकी सब चीज़ें भूल जाता हूँ । ऐसे ही जब बैंड वाजे देने की बात हुई तो मेरा मकसद था कि दर्शक हर सुर
और ताल को महसूस कर सकें । चाहे रोमांटिक हो या नाचने वाला गाना, मैं कहता हूँ कि लोग
संगीत को महसूस करें और उसका लुत्फ़ उठाएं ।" और गाने जो आगे रिलीज़ होंगे वो निम्न
