Ms. Ritika Verma, NSS Volunteer from
Department of Anthropology, Panjab University represented PU in the
basic mountaineering course organised by Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF)
in collaboration with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, G.O.I. from 1st
August to 24 August, 2019 at Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter
Sports (JIM & WS), Pahalgam for the best volunteers from NSS, NCC, NYKS and
armed forces. She was selected for this high altitude training camp based on
her dedication and team work in NSS from last two years. She was the only girl
from Panjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh in the course among four others. There
were total 54 students in the camp at National level course of G.o.I. where she
represented NSS among seven others from other states. The whole course was
undertaken by the highly trained Army personnel for the mountaineering
adventure. She informed about her experiences in the climbing and rappelling
techniques, Load packing, carrying and Marching technique and leant to rescue
in avalanche and crevasse. Technicalities on rock craft and ice craft were also
taught in the courses which were worth learning. River crossing and
trekking was also a great experience. Special lectures on the problems of high
altitude illness and basic life support was taken by the instructors. Ms.
Ritika attained 2nd position in the written test of course and 3rd position in
endurance test among the group held at the end of the course.
