The Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T Chandigarh, Sh.
V.P. Singh Badnore today laid the foundation stone of the much awaited and
desired flyover and underpass at Tribune Chowk, Chandigarh. During the ceremony
a congratulatory message by Sh. Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport
& Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation
was played congratulating the Member of Parliament for her efforts which have
resulted in the commencement of this project. He also spoke about the various
initiatives being undertaken by the Government of India in expediting various
road projects, public benefit schemes, cleaning of Ganga etc.The Adviser to
Administrator said, "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
the Member of Parliament for taking this project on a priority basis, the
result of which is today's foundation stone ceremony. I feel that this Flyover
will be known in times to come as the signature bridge for Chandigarh." The
Member of Parliament addressing the gathering shared, "Today is a special
day for me and Chandigarh. I would like to thank Sh. Nitin Gadkari Ji for
giving Chandigarh this precious gift. It is a sense of joy to be able to see
this idea that was generated long back, come to life today. She further thanked
the Governor of Punjab and Administrator U.T. Chandigarh, all the officers of
Chandigarh Administration and various stakeholders who have played a part in
bringing the project of Flyover and Underpass at Tribune Chowk and Maloya
Housing Complex to a successful conclusion. To ease out the traffic on the
Tribune Chowk, which falls on National Highway (NH-5), Chandigarh
Administration had taken up the matter with Ministry of Road Transport and
Highways, Government of India. The Ministry had then accorded approval to
engage the services of Consultant for finding an appropriate solution for the problem
of traffic congestion. Post reviewing the various proposals prepared by the
Consultant, the Ministry accorded approval amounting to Rs. 183.74 Crore for
grade separated intersection at Tribune Chowk. The flyover will start right
after the Medical Chowk and cover the entire Tribune Chowk along Dakshin Marg.
In addition to this, there will also be an underpass along Purv Marg and an
elevated rotary at Tribune Chowk with slip roads along all the sides. The
construction of the flyover and underpass will help to make traffic steady and
smooth at the most busy junction of the city, where there is the highest
concentration of vehicular traffic. The ceremony took place in the august
presence of Smt. Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament, Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS,
Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Sh. Ajoy Kumar Sinha, IAS,
Finance Secretary, Sh. Sanjay Beniwal, IPS, DGP, Chandigarh Police, Sh. O.P.
Mishra, IPS, DIG, Chandigarh Police, Sh. Mandip Singh Brar, IAS, Deputy
Commissioner Chandigarh, Sh. S. S. Nahar, Additional Director General, Ministry
of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, officers of Chandigarh
Administration and other dignitaries from the city.
