CWSD, PU, CHANDIGARH ORGANIZED A SPECIAL LECTURE
FOLLOWED BY DR. SATWINDER BAINS

Department cum Centre for Women’s Studies and
Development, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a Special Lecture
followed by an Interactive Session by Dr. Satwinder Bains, Director, South
Asian Studies Institute, Simon Fraser University, Canada. Dr. Satwinder
apprised the students about various scholarships, exchange programmes and
employment opportunities in Canada. Coming to the theme of the lecture, she
discussed about the gender issues faced by Indian Diaspora in Canada.
Elaborating on chain migration, she said that there are a large number of
Punjabi migrants (diaspora) in Canada therefore gender sensitization at
mass level is the need of the hour. The migrants are grappling with
the multiple issues of culture, language, customs, norms, adjustments etc.
Dr. Bains also raised her concerns over rising violence amongst Punjabi youth
in Canada. About 60 students from Department of Women's Studies and
adjourning Departments in Emerging Areas building attended the lecture.
The discussion was followed by an interactive session. At the outset, Dr.
Rajesh K. Chander, Chairperson welcomed the Speaker. Prof. Pam Rajput
(Professor Emeritus & Dean, Faculty of Arts) introduced the Speaker
and Prof. Manvinder Kaur proposed a formal Vote of Thanks.
