Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor , Panjab University inaugurated a two day national workshop on Single Crystal Structure Determination of Small Molecules at the Department of SAIF/CIL today. In the inaugural address, Prof. Kumar mentioned the importance of learning the X- ray diffraction technique and its importance in research as well as teaching. He added that such workshops should be made open to general public and especially to school children to build a scientific temper in the young minds. He congratulated SAIF/CIL for putting extraordinary efforts to maintain the sophisticated instrumentation facility.For the benefit of its users (specially the students) the working hours of SAIF/CIL have been increased to 15 hours a day (8.00am till 11.00pm). He has plans to extend this infrastructure and add more sophisticated instrumentation by replicating a new state-of-the-art facility. Prof. S.K.Mehta, Director SAIF/CIL showcased the facility to the participants and elaborated on the various events recently conducted at SAIF. Dr. Akihito Yamano from Rigaku, Japan and Dr. Subash Sahoo (Convener), PU Chandigarh elaborated the schedule of the two day workshop. Over 70 participants from various institutes such as PU, GNDU, KU, AMU, INST, IISER Mohali, IIT Mandi, IIT Jammu, CU Bhatinda registered for this workshop. The participants will be given hands-on- training on the state of the art X-ray instrumentation facility. Dr. Akihito Yamano, Senior Scientific Officer and General Manager Application Laboratory, Rigaku Corporation, Prof. Geeta Hundal, Head of the Chemistry Department, GNDU, Prof. P. Venugopalan, Department of Chemistry, Prof. Sanjay Mandal, IISER Mohali, Dr. A. R. Choudhury, IISER Mohali, Prof. A. Ramanan, IIT Delhi and Dr.SubashSahoo, Department of Chemistry are the resource persons of this workshop.
